I grew up with a do-it-all Dad. I never saw a repair man come to our home. My father fixed our plumbing, built furniture, maintained and repaired our vehicles, repaired TVs and radios, added rooms from studs to wiring to wallboard, etc. Dad wasn't satisfied with "adequate." His work had to be excellent for him to be satisfied. 

And guess who got "volunteered" to be his "go-fer"? Yeah, me. I didn't really appreciate it at the time. But as a young adult, I started fixing my own cars. As a homeowner, I put down my own flooring, built my own decking, did wiring, lighting, wallboard, light plumbing, and fixed whatever wasn't working. Dad had shown me how things worked, how to troubleshoot problems, how to find any info I needed to do the job right. In all of this, I discovered the joy and the "therapy" of fixing what was broken, adding new conveniences, and doing work that met those Dad-instilled standards of excellence.

My Grandfather taught me a rhyme that he repeated often:
    When a task is first begun / do not stop until it's done.
    Be the task great or small / do it right or not at all.
